The Market
The old stereotype of the recumbent rider is no longer accurate. Gone are the days of the geeky, time-consuming nerds. Today’s trike riders cover all ages and demographics. For the most part they are not cycling enthusiasts. These are new customers who would probably not walk into a bike shop without an interest in TerraTrikes. Our dealers have enjoyed rapid sales growth and increasing popularity of triking in recent years.

We offer models in every price range and style starting at just $799 retail. We also offer a full line of accessories specifically engineered for use on TerraTrikes.

Does TerraTrike Sell Direct?
Yes. We sell direct through our destination shop storefront in Kentwood, Michigan. We also ship direct to customers who are not near a dealer. 

TerraTrike began as a direct-only mail order company.  Once we became established in the market, dealers began knocking on our door.  Initially we turned them all away because we were not large enough to supply and support them appropriately or offer acceptable profit margins.  Then dealers banged on the door and eventually we invited everyone to the party with the understanding that we would continue to sell direct.  This arrangement still stands and has worked well for years.  Our business plan is as follows:

TerraTrike invests an immense amount of advertising dollars on a national scale to direct people to our web site and consequently to our dealer map. We point any customer who inquires to the nearest dealer on this map. If we recognize that a customer is near a dealer then we encourage them to visit the dealer.  It is to our advantage to send them to you, the dealer, as you are able to offer test rides and service the customer more efficiently.  Our dealer base is not nearly large enough to cover every area so the intent of the direct sale option is to service those customers who are either too far away from a dealer or for whatever reason choose not to enter the dealership. 

What if a local customer rides into your shop with his mail-order TerraTrike looking for a tune-up?  Well, first of all, don’t get angry.  Realize that we just created a walk-in customer for you and view it as an opportunity to sell tune-ups, repairs, and accessories while creating a life-long customer with returning revenue flow. Secondly, we do our best to respect your local area but realize that we don’t have the resources to territorially sort all of the orders we receive.  So, if we accidentally step on your toes with, for example, an automated online order from your neighboring town, just call us and we’ll take care of you by crediting you the full dealer margin on the trike.  Finally, ask yourself why that customer did not initially know that you were a TerraTrike dealer.  We supply the national advertising and the dealer map but we expect you to advertise locally.  Our best dealers report great success with local advertising campaigns.  What are you doing to tell your neighbors that you sell TerraTrikes?

All trikes that we sell direct are sold at full MSRP plus $149 shipping (when applicable). We do not undercut our dealer’s margins. In conclusion, this hybrid approach to our distribution channel benefits our dealers in two important ways. It allows us to keep the retail prices low and the dealer margins high. Without this structure, neither of those would be possible.

Dealer Territory
As a general rule we do not offer specific territorial protection. We process each dealer inquiry on a case-by-case basis and we take into consideration elements such as local population, geography and dealer performance. Our best performing dealers may be awarded more protection than less well performing dealers. We qualify new dealers based on a set of parameters and deny more than we accept. We’d rather have just a few great dealers than a great number of average dealers.
