Trouble Downshifting

edited October 2009 in Legacy Products
I bought a Path 8 last week and I just love it. One really annoying issue has cropped up though. Everytime I'm cruising along in mid to upper gears and I encounter a hill to climb, I can only gear down to about 3rd and the shifter won't turn any more. If I come to a complete stop, it will allow me to gear down to 1st, but coming to a complete stop kind of kills your momentum. I am not pedaling when shifting. Is this a common problem? Can my dealer fix it?

Other than that I couldn't be happier with it.

  • I suggest bringing it back to your dealer. They should be able to figure out whether it's the shifter or the hub.

  • I took it in for them to look at, and they pretty much said that was not unusual for a Sturmey-Archer hub. You just have to get used to backpedaling a little while coasting to make it get down into the lowest couple of gears. I guess I will just have to get used to it...
