What's the purpose of the plastic on the boom?

There is a 1/2" x 4" piece of plastic on the boom. It's secured by 2 screws. Unless this a mount for hardware or accessories, I can't figure it's purpose. Please advise.

  • You can add a drink holder to it or use it to mount a front headlight. Many people have used it for different things.
  • If you are talking about the Rover, the "plastic" is a cover for protecting the bolt holes. This would be where you would mount a derailleur post if you wanted to add a 2 or 3 chain ring crank set. You can also mount a water bottle cage there, as the spacing fits most of the cages made.

And it's not really plastic if I remember right. It's a chunk of square tubing steel with plastic end caps. I removed mine in order to mount the Velotop. The Velotop mount for the Rover is a pair of metal frames that bolt on where this piece is around the boom.
